# Time period and time unit

> Set the date range and the time unit of a Kubit report: Fixed, Last, Last Full, Since and Start Of ranges, missing dates and allowed time units per report type.

Every Kubit report needs a time period, so every report builder has a time period section. This page covers the date range options, the **Include Missing Dates** setting and the time unit that sets how many data points a chart shows.

![Funnel report builder with the Time Range section highlighted near the bottom, showing a Last 1 day date range and an All time unit, above the Compare dropdown.](https://mintcdn.com/kubit/9i8QHxqek50tMBGy/images/reports/common/time-period-section.png?fit=max\&auto=format\&n=9i8QHxqek50tMBGy\&q=85\&s=e9fc2d42c37118959f9cce9b8065ac45)

## When to use

| Use case | Example |
| - | - |
| An investigation saved to a dashboard | A **Fixed** range, so a dashboard refresh doesn't move the dates |
| Recent metrics on a dashboard | **Last** 7 days of sessions, refreshed every day |
| Weekly or monthly reporting | **Last Full** week, so partial weeks don't skew the numbers |
| Tracking since a launch | **Since** the date a feature shipped |
| Progress on an initiative | **Start Of** the month or quarter |

## Date range

The date range sets which dates the report includes. Five options are available, and each suits reports you add to dashboards in a different way.

| Option | Use it when |
| - | - |
| `Fixed` | You save an investigation to a dashboard. A fixed range doesn't change when the dashboard refreshes. |
| `Last` | You track recent metrics on a dashboard. This is the usual choice. |
| `Last Full` | You report weekly or monthly and need full weeks and months only |
| `Since` | You report from a specific date onward, such as a new feature's launch |
| `Start Of` | You report on an initiative since the start of the month or quarter |

### Include Missing Dates

**Include Missing Dates** is on by default. When it's on, the report adds zero-value data points for dates with no matching events. When it's off, the report skips dates with no data.

| Constraint | Details |
| - | - |
| Compare | Compare isn't available when **Include Missing Dates** is off. See [Compare](https://learn.kubit.ai/product-analytics/reports/common/compare.md). |

> "Show me daily sessions for the last full week"

> "Count checkout events since Oct 1, 2026, by day"

## Time unit

The time unit sets the interval Kubit aggregates data over. The interval you pick sets the number of data points on the chart in Query, Funnel and Retention reports.

| Time unit | What it does |
| - | - |
| `Daily` | One data point per day |
| `Weekly` | One data point per week |
| `4-Weeks` | One data point per 4-week bucket, regardless of which months the weeks fall in |
| `Monthly` | One data point per month |
| `Yearly` | One data point per year |
| `All Time` | One data point for the whole range from the start date to the end date |

![Time unit dropdown open with Daily, Weekly, 4-weekly, Monthly, Quarterly, Yearly and All time, with Weekly selected.](https://mintcdn.com/kubit/9i8QHxqek50tMBGy/images/reports/common/time-unit-options.png?fit=max\&auto=format\&n=9i8QHxqek50tMBGy\&q=85\&s=062c557e75a040edeaef59c54a0af4be)

Data Table, Path, Cohort and Significance reports don't use a time unit. To split a Data Table by month, week or day, add a time field such as `Event Month` or `Event Day` as a breakdown.

### Allowed time units by report type

| Report type | Allowed time units |
| - | - |
| Query | All time units |
| Funnel (Conversion) | Day, Week, Month, Quarter, Year, All Time |
| Funnel (Frequency) | All Time only |
| Funnel (Time to Convert) | All Time only |
| Path | All Time only |
| Retention | Day, Week, Month (sets the return period intervals) |
| Data Table | All time units |
| Significance | All Time only |

### MCP prompt examples

> "Show weekly active users for the last 3 months"

> "Build a monthly retention report for users who signed up this year"
