# Compare

> Overlay a prior time period on Query, Funnel and Data Table reports in Kubit to see how a metric changed, with presets or a custom end date.

Compare overlays a prior time period on a Kubit report so you can see how a metric changed. The current period and the comparison period appear in the same chart. Compare works on Query, Funnel and Data Table reports. This page covers the comparison presets, how each report type shows the comparison and the constraints.

## When to use

| Use case | Example |
| - | - |
| Trend detection | This week's event count against last week's, to spot growth or decline |
| Launch impact | The week after a release against the week before, to measure its effect |
| Seasonal analysis | This month against the same month last year, to account for seasonality |
| Regression check | Today's error rate against yesterday's, to catch a regression early |

## Comparison presets

Each preset runs the same query shifted back by a fixed amount.

| Preset | What it compares to |
| - | - |
| Previous Day | The same query, shifted back 1 day |
| Previous Week | The same query, shifted back 1 week |
| Previous Month | The same query, shifted back 1 month |
| Previous Quarter | The same query, shifted back 1 quarter |
| Previous Year | The same query, shifted back 1 year |

### Custom comparison

Choose **Date Range Ending At** to compare against any date. Kubit takes the offset from the end of your current date range to the date you pick, then covers the same duration backward from it.

### MCP prompt examples

> "Show me daily event count this week compared to last week"

> "Create a KPI of average latency for the last 7 days compared to the previous 7 days"

## How comparison shows by report type

### Query reports

In a Query report, the comparison shows differently for each chart type.

| Chart type | How the comparison shows |
| - | - |
| **Bar** | Comparison bars next to the primary bars, in a lighter shade |
| **Line** | A comparison line over the primary line, with its own styling |
| **Stacked** | Comparison stacked segments next to the primary ones |
| **Combo** | Comparison bars and lines over the primary ones |
| **KPI** | The comparison value under the primary number, with the percent change (for example `+12%`) |
| **Pie** | A comparison pie next to the primary pie |

Once comparison data loads, the chart legend has two toggles:

| Toggle | What it does |
| - | - |
| **Show Measure** | Shows or hides the current period |
| **Show Compare** | Shows or hides the comparison period |

Use them to see only the current data, only the comparison or both.

### Funnel reports

In a Funnel report, primary data shows as solid bars and comparison data as striped bars next to them. Comparison step names start with `[Previous]`, or `[Future]` for a forward-looking comparison. Every primary step has a comparison step. If a step has no comparison data, a zero-value placeholder keeps the chart aligned.

| Constraint | Details |
| - | - |
| Mode | **Conversion mode only.** Frequency and Time to Convert don't support Compare. |
| Breakdown | Compare works with breakdowns. Each breakdown value gets its own comparison pair. |

### Data Table reports

In a Data Table report, each measure column splits into current and previous values side by side. Turn on **Show % Change** to add a column with the percent change between periods. Increases show in green and decreases in red.

### MCP prompt examples

> "Show me the checkout funnel this month compared to last month, broken down by platform"

> "Create a data table of event count by model name this week compared to last week, with percent change"

## Compare support by report type

| Report type | Compare supported | Notes |
| - | - | - |
| Query: Bar, Line, Stacked, Combo, KPI, Pie | Yes | With the **Show Measure** and **Show Compare** toggles |
| Query: Histogram, Treemap, Waterfall, Scatter, Heatmap, Impact | **No** | |
| Funnel | Yes | Conversion mode only |
| Data Table | Yes | With an optional percent change column |
| Path | **No** | |
| Retention | **No** | |
| Significance | **No** | |

## Constraints

| Constraint | Details |
| - | - |
| Include Missing Dates | Compare isn't available when **Include Missing Dates** is off. See [Time period](https://learn.kubit.ai/product-analytics/reports/common/time-period.md#include-missing-dates). |
| Funnel modes | Only Conversion mode supports Compare. Frequency and Time to Convert don't. |
| Time unit | Compare isn't available in Query reports when the time unit is **All Time**. |
